Carpet vs. Hardwood. What Should I Choose?

The age-old debate between carpeting and hardwood floors boils down to more than just aesthetics. Some people are die-hard hardwood floor fans, while others prefer the soft comfort of carpeting. Before deciding which to go with in your house, consider these things:
The Noise Factor
If you live in a multi-story house and have hardwood floors, then you’re going to hear the echo of footsteps above your head quite a bit. Hardwood floors don’t have the “muffle” factor of carpeting, so they can up the noise level in your house. If this doesn’t bother you, then go with hardwood floors. However, if you like a quiet house, then choose carpeting instead.
The Pet Factor
Do you have a lot of furry animals, like cats and dogs? If you answered “yes,” then you already know that their hair ends up everywhere: on your furniture, stuck to your clothing, and even embedded into your carpeting, where it can be tough to vacuum up. This is why many pet owners prefer hardwood floors. The fur shed by your pets is easy to clean up, and so are the accidental messes left behind by your beloved cats and dogs.
The Climate Factor
There is no way around it: hardwood floors get cold in the wintertime. And there is nothing more unpleasant than stepping out of bed and getting instantly awakened when your feet touch that freezing cold floor. Of course, you can always put down an area rug to prevent this, but you can also install wall to wall carpeting.
When refinished or installed correctly, hardwood floors can give you house a whole new personality. They can make it look sophisticated or comfortable, based on the chosen finish. The same is true for carpeting, depending on the color and pile selected, which makes the debate that much more difficult. The choice is truly up the homeowners!
