Are you noticing more dust accumulating throughout your home than usual? Is pet hair or dander building up more than it used to? Maybe your heating costs are rising even though you’re cutting back. If any of that sounds familiar, it might be time to change your furnace filter. Lifehack your home and wallet by following these simple guidelines to maintaining your furnace filter.

UP IN THE AIR

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems take in air in order to circulate it throughout the home– heating and cooling the air as needed. These systems use extra fine filters to prevent dust, hair, dander and other unpleasant airborne particles from moving through your home’s air.

QUALITY CONTROL

Furnaces and other air circulation systems are fitted with filters that are often hypoallergenic. Even so, these filters will build up with debris over time– limiting their ability to remove particles and lowering your home’s air quality. It is good practice to clean or replace your filters every four to six months. Increased regular maintenance may be required if your household has pets or if residents smoke indoors, as well as if you frequently leave doors and windows open.

CLEANING

Check your furnace or air circulation system’s model number and consult any owner’s or maintenance manual. Remove the filter from its designated location– it usually slides out easily. Dust and debris should be vacuumed off. Spray or hose the filter off with clean water and let it dry completely. Re-insert the filter as instructed, noting that it is oriented for proper airflow. REPLACEMENT

Check your furnace or air circulation system’s model number and consult any owner’s or maintenance manual. Remove the filter from its designated location– it usually slides out easily. Note the size and model number of the filter. Use those specifications to find the necessary replacements at any hardware or home supply store. Install the new filter as directed, noting that it is oriented for proper airflow.
