Deck Building
What better way to take advantage of Edmonton’s beautiful summers than by adding a deck to your home’s landscape? A simple deck can create an oasis of comfort and enjoyment.
But building one is not that simple. If you are planning to build a deck at home, there are some crucial steps to follow to ensure that your deck is built properly and safely:
Planning Your Deck
Building a deck requires some careful planning. Apart from designing or choosing a layout and size, you will also have to decide if you want the deck attached to your home or free-standing.
That may sound easy, but the planning doesn’t end there.
Many areas require special permits when it comes to making any additions to your home. You will have to look into local codes and restrictions either through your local building department or home-owner’s association. There are typically requirements and restrictions/zoning laws involving size, height, location, etc.
Once that is all sorted out, you will need to consider what kind of materials to use for your deck.
Gathering Your Materials
How much do you know about beams and spacing? How about posts and footings?
There are many components involved in building a deck. You will need to know how many posts and footings are required to support the beams as well as the size of the beams and the spacing between them.
You will also need to choose what kind of material you want to use when building your deck. Nowadays, you can opt for real wood, composite materials or synthetic materials. The material you choose depends entirely on your style, personal taste, and cost – as well as durability and longevity.
Keep in mind that different types of material can be used for different aspects of your deck. For instance, one type of lumber or decking can be used for structural parts while others can be used for surfaces and railings.
Should You DIY Your Deck?
Decks are one of those home-related structures that you don’t necessarily need to hire a professional for – but you need to have the know-how, tools and a lot of patience to construct one yourself.
When you hire a professional, you are ensuring that your deck is built safely, properly and within code.
